Super 8 Music Video:

Gilbert’s Dead

About

While studying Motion Pictures at Hochschule Darmstadt in Germany as part of my Erasmus exchange, I collaborated with a team of fellow students to create a Super 8 music video for Cork band Gilbert’s track Gilbert’s Dead. Taking on the role of producer, I was heavily involved in developing the creative concept, working collaboratively with the team to shape an idea that complemented the music and translated it into a distinctive visual approach.

Shot entirely on Super 8 film, the project required careful planning and a considered approach to production. We worked together to develop the concept, plan our shots and scout locations, balancing our creative ambitions with the practical limitations of shooting on analogue film. With a finite amount of footage available, thorough pre-production was essential to making every frame count.

The project was a formative experience in my development as a filmmaker and producer, strengthening my interest in visual storytelling, creative collaboration and bringing ideas from initial concept through to production. In 2020, the video won Best Music Video at the First Cut! Youth Film Festival and was also selected for several other festivals, including IndieCork Film Festival and Lift-Off Global Network Sessions.

The experience deepened my appreciation for analogue filmmaking and the creative possibilities of working within technical constraints, while reinforcing the importance of strong concept development and collaborative production.
